Under 200 metres from the Welsh coastline north of the town of Cardigan this uninhabited island, owned by the Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales, is managed for wildlife. The whole island is a SSSI. Birds such as guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, shags, fulmars and a variety of gulls all nest on the island, while bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoise and Atlantic grey seals may be seen in the surrounding sea. Non-landing wildlife boat trips operate from Patch Beach, south of Gwbert.

Almost within touching distance of Cardigan Island, Cardigan Island Farm Park campsite and café overlooks the Teifi estuary and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and is located on a picturesque headland in the southern part of Cardigan Bay.
