Crane Island sits at the base of tall cliffs south west of Portreath. These wild isles can only be reached by scrambling down the cliffs from the South West Coast Path for the very competent scrambler. Alternatively the island, along with Samphire Island, can be viewed from above on the South West Coast Path.
Look out for
- The stunning coastal walk to the island
How to get to Crane Islands
The Crane Islands can either be reached by a stunning six-kilometre walk from Godrevy Point, which includes the spectacular Hell’s Mouth, or directly from Basset’s Cove car park. The islands are at the bottom of a loose cliff which, despite faint paths, is not recommended unless you are very sure on your feet, enjoy a little exposure, and know the tide times as it is easy to get stranded.
How to get down to Basset’s Cove
From the car park at Basset’s Cove head to the coast path, walk left for a short distance to find the obvious but partial track heading down the steep cliffs. This track then becomes much more precarious and requires sure-footedness to reach the Basset’s Cove beach (which disappears at high tide). The island can also be reached by walking along the foreshore at low tide from Basset’s Cove, slightly further to the east (although again this is dangerous without knowledge of the tides)
Where to park for Crane Islands
The National Trust car park at Basset’s Cove (Post code TR14 0HE; Grid ref. SW 638 440; What3Words text.preparing.visa). From Portreath head south on the B3301 to find the car park on the left.
