Stand on top of this small tidal island at the northern end of Rhossili Bay and wonder what life was like around nine thousand years ago when the sea was nineteen kilometres away, the views were across expansive plains, and the island was a basecamp for Mesolithic hunters. The island subsequently became an Iron Age hillfort, which can still be seen today, and then a medieval monastery. On a clear day you can see Caldey Island to the west and in spring and summer it is covered by flowers such as thrift and sea campion. The island, which has a high point of 30m, is popular with surfers and walkers enjoying the Wales Coast Path or circular walks through the dunes from Broughton.

There are several great camping options close to Burry Holms, with plenty of campsites in Llangennith – the advantage of Llangennith camping is that you are close to one of the best Gower pubs and very close to Rhossili beach.
Food near Burry Holms Island
The Llangennith pub, the Kings Head, is one of the best pubs in Gower. With good food, great Sunday lunches, a good selection of beers and located in the centre of this lovely village whats not to like.

Burry Holms Walk Summary:
The free-range circular walk around the coast of Burry Holms offers some great views of the full sandy length of Rhossili Beach to Worm’s Head to the south, and far-reaching views across Carmarthen Bay as far as Caldey Island and Tenby to the west and Whiteford Lighthouse and Burry Port to the north west. Although just off the Wales Coast Path, there is a wild feel on the island which is coloured by sea campion and thrift in the summer.
Route description:
The get to Burry Holms Island see the Burry Holms Walk – link. To walk around Burry Holms Island, leave the Wales Coast Path at Spaniard Rocks and take the easy scramble down the rocks to the beach. Cross the beach for about 150m and scramble onto the island’s eastern flank (alternatively there is an easier path along the sand to the southeast of the island). There is a faint path that follows the coast line around the island, or if overgrown it is easy to find a free-range route (avoiding the multiple rabbit holes). The ruins of 14th century St Cenydd chapel and a schoolroom can be seen at island’s eastern end.
