Herm coast path route summary

The walk around Herm is a leisurely yet rewarding circuit that begins at the harbour and takes in the island’s most stunning sights. Starting southward, you’ll pass the charming White House Hotel and its beehive-shaped one-room prison before ascending to the rocky southern plateau. Here, dramatic cliffs and sweeping views of Jethou, Sark, and distant reefs unfold. Key landmarks include the Rosière Steps and Barbara’s Leap, a deep fissure named after a daring rescue. Turning north along the east coast, wooded paths lead to Puffin Bay and Belvoir Bay, a hidden gem with white sands and turquoise waters.

Further along, Shell Beach’s extensive dunes and crystal-clear waters offer opportunities for kayaking, swimming and snorkelling. The northern common is rich with wildflowers and Neolithic tombs like Robert’s Cross.

The final stretch along the wind-blown north coast features historic sites such as an obelisk daymark and remnants of the oyster industry at Oyster Point. Inland detours reveal quaint stone hamlets, a chapel with unique stained-glass windows, and panoramic views from the Seagull campsite. The walk concludes at the bustling harbour, where tranquillity returns once the last ferry departs.

Walk route around Herm Island coast path

Start at Herm Harbour and follow the pier path to the right just before the white ‘sails’ sculpture. Continue along the coast path in front of the White House. Before descending towards the low-water landing pier at Rosière Steps, take the small path on the left, climb the granite steps and head uphill to Point Sauzebourge. Continue along the undulating cliff-top path, past Puffin Bay, to reach the headland at Caquorobert.

Drop down to Belvoir Bay, then up the other side, following signs to Shell Beach and café. Leave Shell beach and café, bearing right on a path that heads north across The Common and to the left of the dunes to reach the NE tip, La Pointe du Gentilhomme/Alderney Point.

Turn left along Mouissonnière Beach to reach the obelisk. From here, continue past the Neolithic graves, to reach the main track and an optional low-tide visit to tiny Hermetier, then continue on back to the quay.
