About Isle of Dogs
On a large meander and bounded on three sides by the River Thames the Isle of Dogs is delineated from the mainland in the north by the South Dock with its eastern lock gate and western drainage culvert. Once the bogs of Stepney Marsh, then drained by the Dutch, it grew to become one of the busiest docks in the world. These thrived until the 1970s when a shift towards the use of shipping containers moved the UK’s docks to the coast and the subsequent closure of the wharves on the island led to a massive downturn and subsequent dereliction of the area. Following a massive regeneration project in the 1980s it is now home to one of the most important financial districts in the world as well as the largest city farm in Europe and some of the best views in London. Wandering the Thames Path, stopping for a pint in historic pubs with stories still told of dockside life, or craning your neck to see the gleaming heights of the financial behemoths all give a strong sense of the role this island played in putting London on the world map.
