About Chapel Island
This limestone outcrop in the middle of the Leven Estuary hovers above the quicksands and racing tides of Morecambe Bay and makes for an adventurous destination. The five-kilometre walk from Canal Foot enters the channels of the River Leven, where you can catch flatfish with your feet, then crosses the sands of Morecambe Bay. The channels and position of the sinking sands often change and so the use of a guide is highly recommended. The island itself, which has a high point of less than five metres, is a tangle of undergrowth but the soft sands that surround it are glorious. There are extensive views of the seaside town of Morecambe, the nuclear plant at Heysham, Blackpool Tower and the peaks of the South Lakes. The southern end of the island is a reserve for over 350 of the nation’s most southerly breeding eider ducks.

How to get to Chapel Island
There is a small carpark available at Canal Foot; the 4km walk along the Ulverston Canal towpath from Ulverston itself makes for a great extension to this route with parking and hot food available at Booths. By rail the Furness Line from Barrow in Furnace to Lancaster stops at Ulvertson and if approaching from the south you get great views over to the island and the sands around it when crossing the Leven’s aqueduct.
