About Church Island
A small, hidden island in the Menai Strait that sits tranquilly to the side of the whirlpools and eddies of The Swellies, just south of the town of Menai Bridge. The main feature of the island is the fifteenth-century St Tysilio’s Church that resembles a charm on a bracelet along with its churchyard and ancient yews. A Grade II listed war memorial sits on the high point of the island, which reaches less than five metres. A small path circumnavigates the island offering wonderful views of both the Menai Suspension Bridge and Pont Britannia as well as the nearby islets. At low tide the surrounding mudbanks are a haven for birdwatchers with little egrets, oystercatchers, curlew and terns; in springtime the island is painted yellow with primroses. Accessed by a short causeway that leads from the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path from Belgian Parade it is accessible on all but the highest spring tides.
