This tiny remote island of Cribinau, which the locals call St Cwfan’s, near Aberffraw has perched upon it one of the most recognisable churches in Anglesey. Located between Porth China and Porth Cwythan, the medieval Grade II listed St Cwyfan’s Church, popularly known as The Church in the Sea, is still fully consecrated and holds several services every year. The church is thought to be dedicated to St Kevin, who founded the monastery across the sea at Glendalough in County Wicklow, Ireland. The area around the island is excellent for rockpooling and the sunsets here are spectacular. The island, which has a high point of less than five metres, is encircled by an oval-shaped sea wall, built in the late 1800s to protect it from sea erosion. Reached either from the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path or the small lane down to Porth Cwyfan, a short walk across the beach leads to the tidal causeway then up a set of stone steps cut into the flank of the sea wall.
Best things on Cribinau:
- Unique tiny island
- Step back in time inside the church
- Sit on its outside benches and enjoy the views to the peaks of Snowdonia
