Llanddwyn Island is a very special island in all seasons whether walking the glistening white-shell paths and swimming in pristine secluded coves or watching winter storms from its shores. This uninhabited rocky peninsula is surrounded by the sands of the bays of Llanddwyn and Malltraeth and backed by the incredibly beautiful dunes of Newborough Warren. There are magnificent views across to the mountains of Snowdonia and every aspect of this island is full of adventure and natural beauty. Associated with St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers whose saint’s day is 25 January when love spoons and cards are exchanged, her legend lives on today. The island is accessible on all but the highest spring tides from the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path.

There are a number of car parks for Llanddwyn Island and Newborough Forest as follows:

Beach car park (charges)

This is the largest of all the car parks with toilets and a small snack van. It is the best car park for exploring Newborough Forest, with plenty of information boards. It is also the best car park for walking to Ynys Llanddwyn Island and visiting Newborough Beach

How to get to Llanddwyn Island

Llanddwyn Island can be reached on a beautiful 1.9km walk from Newborough Beach car park, through the Forest on the ‘Saint, Sand and Sea Trail’ before descending to the beach and then on to the island. The Llanddwyn Island lighthouse, on the southern tip, is reached after a further 1km. The full Llanddwyn Island walk is 6km return.

Tide times for Llanddwyn Island

It is possible to walk to Llanddwyn Island on all but the highest Spring tides – and then only briefly. Check the BBC Tide Table at Criccieth. Spring tides are the days around the full moon. For a few hours after a Spring tide, also take care as the sands here are very soft when you exit the island, and need to drain before walking across after a Spring tide.

A small snack van parks in the Beach car park for hot drinks and limited hot food. Otherwise head to Newborough Village for good coffee, great lunches, and excellent evening tapas, Red Squirrel Café www.redsquirrelcafe.uk ; or traditional pub, good food and beers, the White Lion, tel. 01248 440143
