How to get to Benbecula

There are a few options for getting to Benbecula. By Plane: Benbecula has its own airport, Benbecula Airport (BEB), offering direct flights from Glasgow. The flights are relatively quick and operate regularly, making air travel the most convenient option.By Ferry: Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) ferries operate from the mainland to various points in the Outer Hebrides. The most convenient ferry route for reaching Benbecula is from Uig on the Isle of Skye to Lochmaddy on North Uist. From there, Benbecula is accessible by car via a causeway. By Car: Once on the island chain, Benbecula is connected by causeways to its neighbouring islands, North Uist and South Uist, making car travel straightforward.

Although tiny we have a few favourite things to do in Benbecula.

Hike to Benbecula’s highpoint

Rueval at 124 metres offers some great views of the watery landscape of this low-lying island and across The Minch to the jagged peaks of the Cuillin on Skye. The ascent of Reuval (124 metres) is a 3.5 km walk with 130 metres of ascent that follows a stony track, then moorland path. Turn off the A865 at the crossroads less than half-way down the island from the causeway to follow the brown road signs for ‘Reuval footpath’. Start the walk from the car park at the landfill site (GR NF 815 533). Walk along the track, over a cattlegrid, and along Loch Ba Una. Follow the cairn marking the smaller track to the left and the path through the moorland. Climb quite steeply to reach the trig point. Great views of Beinn Mhor and Hecla on South Uist, the Cuillins on Skye to the east and Eaval on North Uist – all rising from the watery landscapes below. Return the same way. This route is part of the Hebridean Way long-distance walk.

Bird watching in Benbecula is a must. Blessed with multiple, undisturbed habitats for birds there is plenty to see year round. Here are some favourites in the numerous habitats Benbecula has to offer. Coast, especially at Stinky Bay, where a large beach is home to turnstone, purple sandpiper, dunlin and sanderling run back and forth with the tide, their sixth sense keeping them just ahead of the waves. It may also be possible to see phalaropes and Eiders. Beyond the waves, Arctic terns,  little terns, red-throated and great-northern divers and gannets all can be seen diving in their characteristic ways.  Occasionally, Arctic skuas can be seen soaring by. Moorland (near Reuval) hen harrier and short-eared owl can often be seen hunting. Machair on the west coast the elusive corncrake is fairly regularly heard and spotted (best seen in May and early June). Lochs (in south west of the island) offer a good variety of breeding wildfowl including small numbers of Gadwall and Shoveler whilst Garganey are also regular visitors. Good numbers of waders can be found with breeding species including Snipe, Dunlin and a handful of the rare, Red-necked Phalarope. This is their main site in the Outer Hebrides and the last week in May is often the best time to see them in larger numbers.Farmland, Benbucula’s low intensity farmland is also a great site for skylarks, greenfinches. Eilean Dorcha Music Festival

The last weekend in July is the family friendly annual Eilean Dorcha music festival which showcases local talent alongside headliners with a mixture of Trad, Rock and Country music.
