At the northern end of the outer Hebridean island chain lies the enchanting Isle of Lewis, the largest island in the Western Isles. Joined to the Isle of Harris in the south, Lewis has the largest population in the Hebrides, as well as the administrative capital of the Western Isles, Stornaway.

Lewis offers a unique blend of breathtaking scenery, fascinating history, and vibrant cultural heritage. One of its most popular sites is the ancient Callanish Stones, a mesmerising stone circle that rivals the grandeur of Stonehenge. These prehistoric structures are not only visually stunning but also steeped in mystery and folklore, making them a must-visit for history enthusiasts.

For nature lovers, the island’s landscapes are a paradise. The rugged cliffs and wide, open beaches, such as Uig Sands, offer dramatic views and are perfect for long beach walks or bird watching.

How to get to Lewis

The main ferry route to Lewis operates between Ullapool and Stornaway; there is also a ferry between Tarbet (Harris) and Uig in Skye. Stornaway also has an airport served by flights from Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Inverness.
