About Oronsay (Skye)

Oronsay is derived from the Gaelic word orasaigh, which means island of low tide. There are several Oronsays in Scotland but this one is spectacularly located in Loch Bracadale on the west coast of the Isle of Skye. Although small in size, this uninhabited, wedge-shaped island offers an adventure-packed walk and a wealth of impressive wildlife. Otters and dolphins in search of a tasty morsel are drawn to the small salmon farm in the loch, and the golden eagles from Talisker Bay and Glenbrittle are often seen soaring overhead.

The best things to do in Oronsay are:

  • Sea cave and tunnel adventure on the south shore
  • Wild camping on the flat grassy area on the north side
  • Spectacular views of Outer Hebrides, Skye and Cuillins
  • Golden eagles, otters and dolphins
  • Sheltered white-sand beaches
