About Luing
Nestled in the Firth of Lorn and just 24 kilometres south of Oban, Luing is a short ferry crossing from the Isle of Seil – itself connected to the mainland by the much-photographed Bridge over the Atlantic. The island was the centre of a once-thriving slate industry and the surreal landscape of fractured cliff walls in the north is thrilling to explore. The most southerly of the so-called Slate Islands of the Inner Hebrides, it is a place of peaceful pastureland grazed by distinctive red Luing cattle, and unspoilt foreshore. From its western coast there are incredible sunset views to the neighbouring isles.
Some of the best things to do in Luing:
- Explore the Slate Islands Heritage Centre
- Walk around the island’s coast
- Look out for seals, otters and seabirds
- Enjoy photographing the historic miner’s houses of Cullipool
How to get to Luing
From Oban drive south on the A816 then onto the B844 and B8003 to reach the small village of Cuan. The Cuan Ferry vehicle runs from Cuan on the southern tip of Seil to the northern tip of Luing https://www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/public-transport/timetables-directory/timetable/isle-luing-isle-seil-ferry
Food in Luing
Luing has a grocery store on the road into Cullipool. In the village of Cullipool, the Atlantic Islands Centre has a café serving excellent cakes and bread and hot food with a view https://www.isleofluing.org . Self-catering and B&B accommodation is available throughout the island.
