The Guardian Travel is top of the list for travel inspiration and I was delighted when they asked me to write about the coastal trails of ten lesser known British islands.

Then the hard work started.

It was going to be the front page of the Travel section for the Saturday paper and so it had to be good.

I had to write a couple of iterations of the main piece and then editors and editor’s assistants followed this up with query after query and fact checking. I normally give the BBC tides website as the general port of call to check tides. The Guardian wanted the direct tide table for each island. I normally suggest that there is a range of accommodation on each island or nearby. The Guardian wanted my exact recommendation. Even my ‘lefts’ and ‘rights’ for the directions were double-checked.

Had to say I was impressed by the rigour – but glad when they finally signed it off.

The end result looks fabulous and I hope readers have tried some of the routes. Read the full article here.
