About Eilean Shona

Fairytale forests, an enchanting valley, and secret coves await on discovering the hidden path to this magical island. Owned and lovingly restored by Vanessa Branson, Eilean Shona is an island where the bar is set high for adventure. The family keeps a ‘Book of Feats’ in which alleged achievements include eating a raw jellyfish, swimming ten hours across open water to the isle of Eigg, and climbing the mountain at midnight.

Eilean Shona is strikingly located at the narrow entrance of Loch Moidart, just south of the rugged Moidart peninsula. To the west are the isles of Muck, Eigg, and Rhum, with Skye to the north. Private and secluded, the island has several restored holiday cottages along with the exclusive main house and gardens, and a permanent population of two.  Large areas of woodland in the east and around the house feature a collection of ancient and rare pines. From the hills of the interior the views are truly spectacular.

After a day on this island, you can appreciate why the author of Peter Pan, J.M.Barrie, chose it as his summer retreat. Although encounters with Captain Hook are unlikely, it is perfectly possible to spot pine martens, white-tailed sea eagles, otters, red squirrels, and even golden eagles here and simply enjoy the magic.

How to get to Eilean Shona

Starting from the main road, just south of Glenuig, a short walk down through the woods leads to the tidal causeway across to Shona Beag where you’ll need good navigation skills and a keen eye for the right animal tracks to take through the wilderness to find the isthmus across to Eilean Shona. For full details check out the islandeering tab.

For guests of Eilean Shona’s holiday cottages a RIB ferries passengers across from the mainland.

Eilean Shona Accommodation

Several excellent self-catering cottages on the island, see www.eileanshona.com . There are no facilities on the island for public use; there is a community shop and great inn and hotel at Glenuig on the mainland.
